1. Increased sun exposure
Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays damages the fibers in the skin, leading to wrinkles and age spots. Although many people believe that a glowing complexion means good health, skin color obtained from being in the sun can actually speed up the effects of aging and increase the risk of developing skin cancer. To enjoy the sun safely, wear protective clothing and sunscreen.
  1. Being overweight
The link between obesity and cancer risk is clear, but exactly how being obese increases the risk is not. Research shows that excess body fat can lead to 13 types of cancer, affecting certain processes in the body, including the management of hormones, insulin, and estrogen. It causes the cells to divide and die, leading to a higher risk of cancer. Fortunately, losing weight can lower the risk and increase the rate of survival.
  1. Overly excessive intake of hot beverages
People who tend to overdrink hot beverages may increase their risk of developing cancer, as hot beverages may burn the esophagus. Hot beverages at or above 149 degrees Fahrenheit can lead to throat burns. Let the drink cool down before taking the first sip to reduce the risk of cancer.
  1. Radiation exposure
Electronic devices like mobile phones, televisions, radios, and even your car emit radiofrequency radiation (a form of non-ionizing radiation) from their antennas. Our body can absorb the radiation and increase the risk of cancer. Avoid long conversations over phone calls to lessen the risk.
  1. Frequent flying is risky
According to a recent study, frequent fliers like pilots, flight attendants, cabin crew, and travelers who have been flying constantly for five or more years have doubled the risk of cancer compared to those who fly less. The flight environment exposes people to carcinogens that can damage the DNA.
  1. Inactivity/ Sedentary Lifestyle
Studies show that vigorous physical activity reduces cancer risk and keeps hormone levels healthy. On the contrary, adults working at a desk for 8 hours or more every day with negligible amounts of physical activity develop a higher risk of colon or endometrial cancer. Exercise is an essential part of one’s daily routine.
  1. Eating too much processed food
Processed foods are convenient, affordable, and woven into our collective diet. Unfortunately, when processed meats are preserved, cancer-causing substances form. Researchers recommend avoiding processed meat or eating as little as possible.
  1. Frequent Dry Cleaning of clothes
Researchers found that there is a small, but definitely increased risk of cancer from wearing freshly dry-cleaned clothes once or twice a week. PERC is a chemical used to dry clean clothes that likely causes cancer. If you frequently dry-clean your clothes, the constant and direct exposure to your body can develop a higher risk of cancer. Infrequent dry-cleaning shouldn’t be an issue.
  1. Over use of cosmetics
Cosmetics containing parabens can be harmful to your health. Parabens are a family of related chemicals commonly used as preservatives in cosmetic products. Parabens in cosmetics can contribute largely to the risk of cancer.
